Have you ever read an interview with Matt Healy? Even today, I love Van McCann from Catfish and the Bottlemen and Matt Healy from The 1975. I loved Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys. All the musicians I loved growing up were men.

Like, I talk about crossing gender barriers in my music. I carry myself somewhere in between, and I think my music lends itself to that as well. It's hard because I think I fall into this in-between space where there's something that's innately feminine about me, and there's also something that's kind of androgynous.

It's like, 'Oh, I've never done that before.' And by never I mean a million times. Like, 'Oh, let's put you in a leather jacket and have you holding a cigarette with red lipstick on.' You know, it's funny because it either goes one way or the other: They'll either try to sweeten me up or they'll play the bad girl thing so obnoxiously. I love when photo shoots go the opposite of what they're expecting, because, for me, it means I walked into a room and proved people wrong from what their preconceived idea of me was, you know?ĭo you think that people, because you've got the hair and the tattoos, want to sweeten you up? When she came back I was holding a burning, smoking bouquet, and then she was like, 'Oh my gosh!' and started freaking out, but then she started taking pictures. My hair was big and dreaded and blue, and 's like, 'Can you hold these flowers?' She went to get a lens, and I took the newspaper from the outside of the bouquet, squished it up, shoved it in the middle of the bouquet, and lit it on fire. I looked like Lara Croft from Tomb Raider. I've done a couple other print shoots, like, I did one in LA right before the tour started, for a teen publication, and they brought me a bouquet of flowers and were like, 'Can you hold these?' I was wearing Doc Martens, a denim jacket, a wife beater, and jeans. I haven't seen them in real life so I'm so excited to see what they do with them. You should know that your portraits from our shoot are absolutely breathtaking. Thank you, Halsey, for shining a light on the grey matter.
